The South Korean government has today, April 30, 2026, appointed Choi Byung-hwan, a veteran policy expert, as the new chairman of the National Gambling Control Commission (NGCC). This appointment marks a strategic pivot toward heightened consumer protection and the prevention of gambling addiction in a rapidly digitalizing market. Chairman Choi is expected to lead a nationwide initiative to strengthen oversight of both land-based casinos and the grey-market online sector. According to reports from Inside Asian Gaming, his primary focus will be the implementation of “Responsible Gaming” AI tools that can monitor real-time player behavior across the country’s legal gaming venues, ensuring that the industry’s growth does not come at a social cost.
