The “Delayed Check-Raise”: Exploiting C-Bet Automation in Online Poker

In modern online poker, many opponents play an automated style, automatically firing a Continuation Bet (C-Bet) on the flop whenever they were the pre-flop aggressor. To disrupt this robotic pattern without relying on tracking software, skilled manual players utilize the “Delayed Check-Raise” technique on the turn.

  • The Flop Float: When you are out of position (e.g., in the Big Blind) and hit a mid-pair or a backdoor draw on a dry flop (like King-8-3 rainbow), resist the urge to raise immediately. Simply call (float) the opponent’s standard C-bet. This conceals the true strength of your hand.
  • The Turn Trap: If the turn card drops a blank (a card that doesn’t change the board texture, like a 2), check for a second time. An aggressive, automated opponent will often fire a second barrel to push you off the hand.
  • The Leverage Strike: This is your pivot point. Execute a powerful Check-Raise on the turn. By delaying your raise to the turn, you represent a much stronger range (like a turned set or two-pair) and force the automated bettor into a catastrophic mistake, maximizing the value of your pot.
