Scratch Cards See Soaring Popularity in France: €10.7 Billion Bet in 2024
Scratch cards are now on par with traditional lotteries as one of France’s most popular gambling products. Much of this success is credited to their accessibility. Around 30 different scratch games are available in physical outlets, while nearly 100 can be played online. This omnichannel model has transformed scratch cards into a modern entertainment option.
For many players, scratch cards are linked to emotions, habits, and even superstition.
“If I had a good day, I’ll pick one up on my way home,” said a woman in her 30s. “It’s not about the money—it’s about the fun.”
Others say it’s become part of their routine.
“You walk into a tobacco shop, have some spare coins—you buy a ticket,” one man explained. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. That’s the game.”
Players praised the variety and creativity of the tickets.
“There’s always something new to try,” said one respondent. “Every time a new game comes out, I’ll try it,” another added. “You think, maybe this one will bring better luck.”
“I Like How Simple It Is”
One of the main appeals of scratch cards is their simplicity.
“No complicated rules,” said one participant. “You just scratch and see the result.”
Online players, however, are drawn by speed, interactivity, and digital features.
“I like games with animations or sound effects,” said a younger player. “Feels like playing a video game.”
Some appreciate the convenience of playing on their phones.
“You don’t have to go out. I can play in bed at night,” said one male player. “It’s fast and easy.”
Although 90% of scratch cards are still bought at physical outlets, the number of online users is growing—especially among younger and more digitally-inclined demographics.
“Sometimes I Win, Sometimes I Break Even”
Scratch cards remain popular partly due to their low-cost feel and frequent small wins.
“You don’t expect to get rich,” said one man. “But winning €5 or €10 can put a smile on your face.” “I often win just enough to buy another ticket,” another added. “So the fun keeps going.”
Many noted that the suspense and anticipation of scratching is part of the thrill.
“It’s like a mini roller coaster,” said one player. “You scratch slowly, hoping for good numbers.”
“You Might Forget How Much You Spent”
Despite the fun, players are becoming more aware of potential financial risks.
“€1 or €2 doesn’t feel like much,” said one woman. “But if you buy ten, that adds up.”
Some noted a shift in emotion when buying higher-priced tickets.
“A €10 ticket is no joke,” said one man. “It stings if you don’t win.”
Others admitted to chasing losses.
“You tell yourself, ‘one more,’ and suddenly you’ve spent €50,” shared a male player who mainly plays online.
Digital Trends Require Caution
“The study confirms that scratch cards are a popular and enjoyable activity,” said ANJ in a press release. “But they’re not without risk—especially when played across multiple platforms.”
Among the 5,019 active players surveyed, most were not at high risk. However, players who used both online and in-store channels, or who primarily played online, had significantly higher rates of moderate to high-risk behavior.
“You don’t even feel like you’re spending real money,” said one digital player. “No cash, no ticket—just tapping a screen.”
The study also found that high-risk players were more susceptible to advertising and promotions, especially games with flashy animations and video game-inspired mechanics.
ANJ Remains Vigilant
While most players view scratch cards as harmless entertainment, responsibility is key.
“It’s like buying a little snack,” said one woman. “But if I ever feel like I have to win, I stop.” “It’s a small reward—I don’t make it a habit,” another man said. “If I lose, it’s fine. I wasn’t expecting anything.”
ANJ says it is committed to ensuring players have the tools and awareness they need to gamble safely.
“With such a broad and consistent player base, understanding the appeal and use of these games is more important than ever,” the regulator stated.
